Exposure to Forces of Nature (Weather) Diagnosis Codes - Excluding Heat/Sunlight Exposure - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

This syndrome was created to capture records where the "exposure to forces of nature" diagnosis codes are sent, excluding Heat/Sunlight codes. The original syndrome captured all weather-related events that are explicitly stated and diagnosed, but the majority of these cases were sunburns and heat stroke. The original syndrome is also uploaded, but this syndrome will serve similar purposes as the original while excluding Heat/Sunlight cases when these are not of interest.

Carbon Monoxide Exposure - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

This syndrome was created to capture Kansas ED Visits with chief complaints related to carbon monoxide poisoning/exposure or similar diagnosis codes. The terms "heater" and "generator" are included to potentially capture cases of improper heater and generator use that did not receive relevant CO poisoning terms or codes.

Agriculture-Related Injuries - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

This syndrome was created to explore the possibility of Kansas Syndromic Surveillance Program data for agriculture-related injuries. This topic could potentially cover trauma, injury, occupational public health, and child health. This syndrome is still a work-in-progress and a proof of concept, but has given some promising results so far in Kansas. One point to note is farmers are not particularly descriptive in triage and tend to not complaint excessively so we had to turn to Diagnosis Codes to get the most reliable results.

Chronic Pain Syndrome - Kansas Board of Pharmacy

This is a preliminary Chronic Pain-Related Syndrome, created to search relevant ICD10 and a few key terms in emergency department visits in ESSENCE. The codes and terms are specific to non-cancer related chronic pain with exclusions of cases receiving cancer-related ICD10.

ICD10 codes were selected by translating the following ICD9 codes for Chronic Pain contained in this PDF (https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/pdf/pdo_guide_to_icd-9-cm_and_icd-10_co...)

Carbon Monoxide - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

This syndrome was created to query NSSP ESSENCE on CO Poisoning and Exposure

Kansas just made CO Poisoning a mandatory reportable disease, but this was done so rapidly that hospital didn't have the chance to get reporting measures/alerts in place so many of our CO Poisonings went unreported. This set of queries was created to find these cases through EDs and then educate/remind hospitals of the legislation changes.

Storms - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

This is a cluster of syndromes created to populate an extreme weather myESSENCE tab. The intent was to increase repeatability of our weather surveillance and have something where a user can use the "Change Region" option to select whatever county, or counties, experienced storm activity. This is still a major work-in progress.

All of this as done in NSSP ESSENCE on Emergency Room data. Fields are specified by each syndrome definition.

Carbon Monoxide Exposure V2 - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

KDHE has updated the exhisting CO Poisoning Surveillance queries. Version 1 can be found here https://www.surveillancerepository.org/carbon-monoxide-exposure-kansas-d...

Previously, we were querying for carbon monoxide-related cases by using the NSSP ESSENCE SubSyndrome for COPoisoning coupled with an ICD10 CM diagnosis code query. SubSyndrome and ICD10 queries had to be run separately and then combined and de-duplicated.

Gunshot Injuries - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

Responding to an ask on the ISDS forums (https://www.healthsurveillance.org/forums/posts.aspx?group=190904&topic=...), KDHE made a first attempt at a Gunshot Injury query for Kansas syndromic data. There are a lot of other versions of GSW queries in this forum post. I recommend looking over the thread.

Acute Flaccid Myelitis Diagnosis Codes - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

This syndrome was created to query ESSENCE for KS ED visits potentially associated with Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). Diagnosis codes were provided to KDHE by a CDC AFM contact and originally included approximately 100 codes that could encompass most presentations of AFM. This code reflects a shortened list selecting those codes deemed most likely to accurately reflect AFM.
